This position will report to a Senior Director of Competitive and Market Analysis (CMA) within the Corporate Strategy & Development (CS&D) team and will be responsible for providing comprehensive market and competitor research and analysis to support strategic planning and business unit initiatives. This individual will work both independently and in close coordination with other members of the CS&D team, business unit, strategy and marketing organizations to conduct research and share insights. This individual will be responsible for educating business partners on the implications of competitor activity and assisting in driving the relevant changes to strategy and tactics. This role also provides the opportunity to support strategic and operational planning initiatives, providing broader exposure across the business. The CMA Senior Research Manager will drive projects/engagements include conducting interviews, forming sophisticated hypotheses, conducting research on competitors and markets, and synthesizing conclusions and insights into recommendations. CMA team members work collaboratively with colleagues and internal business partners, and should expect to publish insights as well as prepare and participate in executive presentations.


  • Monitor strategies and actions of keycompetitors in the financial services and not-for-profit retirement servicesindustry

  • Analyze and synthesize key issues and trendsin individual financial services, banking, and/or not-for-profit retirementservices, as well as their implications to TIAA businesses

  • Interact with leaders within the businessunits, strategy and marketing organizations to disseminate relevant and usefulcompetitor insights

  • Partner with the business units, strategy and marketingorganizations to assist in driving the relevant changes to strategy and tacticsthrough regular communication and reporting, as well as in special projects

  • Manage relationships with key externalsyndicated research providers; leverage tools to inform strategic insights anddeliver self-service capabilities to the organization

  • Lead research, occasionally collaborating withexternal research vendors

  • Publish insights as needed including based onindustry events and in quarterly trends presentations

  • Develop methodologies and approaches formonitoring the market and competitors

  • Manage a competitive intelligence intranetportal, including monitoring content updates, functionality demos, andresponding to business partner inquiries

  • Support CS&D and CMA leaders in strategicconsulting, operational planning, M&A analysis, and other managementactivities.


  • Bachelors-level degree

  • 5+ years of professional experiencein financial services, consulting, and/orfinancial services industry research


  • MBAor other Masters-level degree

  • Professionalexperience in, and knowledge of, financial services products (preferably inretirement services, annuities, or investments)

  • Professionalexperience in strategy development and leveraging research to influencestrategies

  • Abilityto put structure around broad business topics / questions and developend-to-end frameworks to strategically address such topics / questions

  • Experienceleading qualitative and quantitative analysis and research, using informationfrom multiple and sometimes conflicting sources

  • Abilityto triangulate, synthesize and communicate information and “big picture”insights and implications appropriate for senior leader audiences

  • Demonstratedstrong writing, presentation development, and presentation delivery skills,including to senior leader audiences

  • Self-starter,high energy and detail oriented; ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Excellentcommunication, interpersonal and leadership skills with a collaborative mindset

  • Projectdevelopment and management skills

  • Abilityto work and adjust to changing deadlines and competing priorities

  • Abilityto work in team settings as well as independently
