KEYRESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Reporting to Nuveen’s Managing Director and head of transformation and oversight, the successful candidate will be responsible for a team of four (one VP and 3 AVPs) coordinating all large and small project activity, including automated workflow and robotic process automation (RPA) initiatives within Nuveen’s Global Investment Operations (NGIO) unit. Working in cooperation with project managers from Nuveen’s IT teams, this newly created NGIO project team will focus on operational requirements for various initiatives throughout the firm. This will include:
Working with NGIO teams to develop detailedwritten requirements for new software development within an application orintegration between applications
Managing business projects within NGIO
Coordinating the conversion of data fromexisting portfolio accounting systems to the Nuveen platform
Coordinating creation and maintenance of usecases for NGIO testing
Testing of applications and interfaces forupgrades and/or new development
Maintaining all test results
Current projects in flight are numerous and include migrating Nuveen affiliates off legacy portfolio accounting applications onto Eagle STAR, integration. Order management systems across affiliates and possibly asset classes, defining required improvements to STAR to support derivatives, private equity and private debt investments, selection and implementation of a new collateral management system, improved support of custodian reconciliation, introduction of robotics and artificial intelligence, improved automated workflows using K-2 or Activity and continued process improvement efforts. As additional affiliates ‘opt in’ to Nuveen’s shared-services platform, the incumbent will lead all efforts to onboard those affiliates to Nuveen systems and processes.
This is an exciting opportunity for a self-starter to define and create an all-new team. The successful candidate will lead the team, but still participate directly managing projects.
5+ years of experience in each of the following(which could be concurrent):
IT, operations and/or accounting experience
Experience in a leadership position ininvestment management
Buy-side experience in traditional asset managementoperations
Ideally, extensive hands-on experience usingEagle STAR as an operations user, though this is not required
Project Management Professional (PMP)certification or equivalent experience successfully managing large-scaleprojects
Significant experience and success managing andmotivating teams
Ability to partner well with others inoperations and throughout Nuveen and TIAA
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Must understand and evaluate operational processes, including their interaction with systems processes and interfaces to identify opportunities for improvement as well as critical weaknesses and opportunities for exploitation. Must understand what comprises an effective control environment across all operational functions within Nuveen supporting a broad array of asset classes and security types. Analytical skills must be combined with deep domain experience to plan projects, propose cost / benefit options and manage deadlines and complex dependencies. Project management skills and experience are required.
In-depth knowledge of the lifecycle of various securities not limited to equities, fixed income, mutual funds, derivatives, private equity and private debt as well as an understanding of how the different areas of investment operations work together as one team to meet goals. Significant understanding of operational risk within investment management is required, including (but not limited to) a strong understanding of which duties must be segregated (and why) and design of an effective control environment. Strong communication and presentation skills are essential.
Have an exceptional understanding of the investment management business with in-depth knowledge of buy-side operations across trade settlement, corporate actions, pricing, collateral management, portfolio accounting and custodian reconciliation. Knowledge of order management systems, portfolio accounting systems, settlement utilities (such as Omgeo, SWIFT and DTCC) and custodians is key. Experience with multi-currency investing, portfolio accounting and performance measurement is essential.
Ability to effectively communicate with a large number of internal and external parties, display ability to actively listen, work as one team, and speak confidently and effectively to both small and large groups is key to this position. Ability to make a persuasive argument, both orally and in writing, is critical for this role.
